Noren is a rectangular curtain with a slit in the middle and a slot at the top for a rod (often bamboo rod).
Noren has been in Japanese households and shops for a very long time. Noren was originally hang at the entranceway to guard against the sun, wind, dust, and nosey neighbors. Now days, Noren is used to provide shade and privacy at doorways and windows. They are commonly used in restaurants and shops as well.
